The Case against Nick Brana as Head of MPP
Before I say my piece on Mr. Brana, I want to say that I was a former volunteer and that I did not have a bad experience in my time with Movement for a People’s Party. This writing comes from a place of love for the organization of Movement for a People’s Party, or at least the MPP that I joined at the time of the People's Convention. I joined the organization with high hopes for the success of Movement for a People’s Party. I still remember fondly when I went with MPP and Todd Jelen to Congressman Fudge’s House. My heart even broke when Todd was recently removed from the board of MPP. I never had a problem with Todd or any individual member. I hope that Todd is doing well and I wish him the best.
However, Nick Brana’s recent actions as head of Movement for a People’s Party do not paint him in a good light. Over a year ago, the black volunteer Renee Johnston had begun a petition to reform MPP into a more horizontally organized group. She and other former volunteers came from across the United States and when they circulated the petition, they were removed from the organization’s Slack chat[1]. Removing dissent is not how MPP should operate and removing black volunteers could even be termed as racist. Renee herself was accused of being a DNC infiltrator despite her history with the Green Party and her membership of Socialist Alternative[2]. The famed former senatorial candidate Paula Jean Swearingen had joined the organization some time after this purge of volunteers. Paula Jean has recently exited due to the accusations and Nick has claimed that she could not find any volunteers to aid her in West Virginia[3]. I highly doubt Nick’s claim since I am aware of Paula Jean’s success in her senatorial primaries, leading to her winning her second primary. I had made my exit from MPP shortly after the petition’s critiques had aired. Before anyone can accuse me of infiltration as a DNC member, I want to say that I just went to protest with Worker’s World Party for the Unionization of Starbucks. You can see the protest here: https://www.facebook.com/RealProgressive/videos/688416082331450. I voted Green in 2016 and voted for Mark Charles in 2020. Now it is time to address the recent accusations against Nick Brana.
Nick Brana was recently accused of sexual harassment and the MPP board attempted to investigate the accusation. Many board members were removed by Brana, a treasurer of MPP and Nick’s father Rodrigo, and some other board members. Among those removed was Todd, and I am not surprised that he has not said anything about the removal. According to the press release from Nick, his accuser had provided no evidence and was good friends with the accusers of Shahid Buttar, who had also provided no evidence against Shahid[4]. Shahid Buttar is innocent and his campaign for Nancy Pelosi’s seat has my support. He is as real of a down-ballot Democrat as one can get. While no evidence has proven the accusation of Nick Brana, his interview with Jordan Chariton of Status Coup does not make a good case for him. Throughout Jordan’s interview, Brana accused him of befriending the accuser, being an infiltrator, and working with the Intercept to smear Nick Brana[5]. I have been interviewed before and have interviewed as a historian, and I have to say no one should walk into an interview and accuse their interviewer, much less leave early. Answer the questions and say the truth, Nick Brana. Don’t accuse with zero evidence. Jordan left TYT over similar accusations of sexual harassment[6]. I do not agree with the accusation of Jordan and the trust of Status Coup’s co-founder Jenn Dize is contrary to this accusation. Nick had no business treating Jordan the way he did in light of Jordan’s own experiences. This is not how an interview should be conducted and I mostly fault Nick Brana. It is also imprudent for Nick to have his father on the board as a treasurer since that smacks of nepotism. However, I would be dishonest if I did not also react to Nick’s interview with Sabrina Salvati of Revolutionary Blackout Network. Sabrina has my respect and RBN has aired its own problems with MPP. RBN has polled its subscribers on Brana and 49% of 1,100 subscribers called for Nick to step down and 65 % of 443 subscribers disapproved of Brana’s leadership[7]. The organization has had its problems with MPP, and I congratulate Brana for going on a platform that has actively criticized him. He is much more respectful to Sabrina in this interview than he was with Jordan, claiming that many members of MPP had accused others of racism and white supremacy. The accusations and the attempts to remove Nick were called illegal by Nick Brana[8]. I’ll assume that this is correct along with the accusations that there was an attempt to take over the party, but he still has very little evidence to prove his claims. His disrespect to Jordan is still reprehensible and another MPP board member claimed that the investigation into Nick Brana was still ongoing, contradicting Nick’s own statement. I do not know whether to believe Nick or the board member, but I still say that Brana is not the best interviewee.
I believe in voting third party, and I appreciate the energy of many who have worked with MPP over the past two years. However, I do not think Nick can adequately speak for his organization. MPP has continuously purged members with unsubstantiated accusations such as with Renee and Swearingen. He had a problematic interview with Jordan Chariton and the state of the investigation is unclear. I do not know the veracity of the sexual harassment accusation and I have no negative experiences with the organization. However, I have seen how the organization has treated its volunteers and I cannot stand for actions that smack of McCarthyism. I respectfully call for Nick Brana to step down as head of MPP and will choose to stay away from the organization and electoral politics as a whole for now.
If you have made it to the end of this article, thank you for your time and attention. Please check out my Linktree and I apologize for the suspension of my Twitter accounts. I also apologize for not writing for so long. My graduate schooling is a necessary pain, but I am doing well. Please listen to my podcasts and check out the rest of my Substack posts.
